What is the Advent of Anxiety?

The "Advent of Anxiety" is a curated series designed to unveil the layers of Anxiety, a common but often misunderstood emotional state. This journey is not just about understanding what Anxiety is; it's about exploring its many facets, triggers and effects on our lives, and most importantly, how we can navigate it with resilience and awareness.

Each day, I will delve into a specific aspect of Anxiety. From its psychological roots to physical manifestations, from personal anecdotes to professional insights, this series aims to provide a comprehensive understanding that demystifies Anxiety and empowers us with knowledge.

You don't have to control your thoughts. You just have to stop letting them control you." – Dan Millman.

Advent of Anxiety is a 4-week, daily blog on my website to raise awareness of Anxiety, in particular those who struggle at this time of year, including myself.

The series will be split up as follows:

  • Week 1: Understanding Anxiety
  • Week 2: Building Healthy Habits
  • Week 3: Coping Strategies
  • Week 4: Seeking Support
  • Final Week: Reflection and planning for the future.

Why create the Advent of Anxiety?

The answer is pretty simple:-

I suffer from Generalised Anxiety Disorder; what that means is I see the world slightly differently. I see the world generally as one significant threat. As a result, I struggle to make meaningful connections, I overthink and worry constantly.

Yup, the monkey brain (for those who have read The Chimp Paradox) hijacks me every hour, every day and every night.

I have had two significant breakdowns from Anxiety, once in 2007 and the other in 2018 - both led me on a downward trajectory, and both led to me seeking help.

The three primary anxiety disorders that affect me:

  • GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder)
  • Health Anxiety
  • Social Anxiety

Daily Anxiety leaves me tired and frustrated. Still, over the years, I have found ways to learn to live with it, and for years, I have thought about how to create a publication to help others.

This time of year is tough for people with Anxiety. The dark winter months often bring about health and social Anxiety. The shorter days and longer nights can make managing these feelings harder, leading to more stress and worry during this season, which is why I have curated this mini-series and why I have decided to release it now.

Suppose you do decide to follow the series along. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to any feedback you can offer.
